Explanation

For a lossless line, R = 0 and G = 0 i.e. \alpha = 0

\beta=\omega\sqrt{LC} Z_0=R_0=\sqrt{\frac LC}

For a distortionless line, RC = LG

\alpha=\sqrt{RG} \beta=\omega\sqrt{LC} Z_0=R_0=\sqrt{\frac LC}

In both case impedance is real.
