The electric field of an electromagnetic wave propagating in the positive z-direction is given by

E={\widehat a}_x\sin\;\left(\omega t-\beta z\right)+{\widehat a}_y\sin\left(\omega t-\beta z+\pi/2\right)

The wave is

(a) linearly polarized in the z-direction

(b) elliptically polarized

(c) left-hand circularly polarized

(d) right-hand circularly polarized

Ans : c)

Explanation

As both the components of electric field have same magnitude with phase difference of π/2; it is circular polarization.

By finding the the resultant E by considering different t we can conclude it is left hand circularly polarized.
