Introduction to Power Electronics

Lecture Notes

Do you want to know, how the inverter works to tackle the power supply , how the battery of the mobile phone gets charged or how the renewable energy sources powers our life.

You will get all the answer of questions in this video.

Let us start by discussing the real life examples which we are using in our day to day life.

Real time examples

i) Mobile phone charger

ii) UPS/Power supply backup

Mobile phone charger – In the diagram you can see, the mobile phone charger, is connected with the 230 V power supply .

The charger is supplying dc current to the mobile phone.

The diagram of mobile phone charger when it is connected to the input supply is shown below,

We can see that the mobile phone charger is supplying an dc current which charges the phone. The mobile phone charger is connected to the ac supply. Here the charger acts as an AC to DC converter .

This is the first application of mobile phone charger.

2) UPS/Power supply

UPS power supply is used when there is a sudden power failure , it provides an backup power by protecting equipment from damage in the event of power failure.

The schematic diagram of UPS/Power supply backup is shown below.

This is the second application of Power Electronics.

For better understanding watch the complete video.

The mobile phone charger and the ups are the day to day used live examples of power electronics.

What is Power Electronics ?

Power Electronics is the branch of electrical engineering which process and control the flow of electrical energy by supplying voltages & current in a form that is optimally suited for user loads.

The two basic function of power electronics are as follows.

i) It is a power conversion device

ii) It control all the parameters of load.

MOSFET, IGBT, diodes etc. are some of the power electronic devices.
