Operations
GAIL’s natural gas transmission segment under its natural gas business vertical consists of its natural gas pipeline infrastructure.
As of 31 December 2021, GAIL owns approximately 13,800 km of the operational natural gas pipeline network, which represents over 67% of India’s overall 20,334 km of the operational natural gas pipeline network.
Since its inception in 1984, GAIL has been the undisputed leader in the marketing, transmission and distribution of natural gas in India.
As India’s leading natural gas major, it has been instrumental in the development of the natural gas market in the country.
GAIL sells around 51% (excluding internal usage) of the natural gas sold in the country. Of this, 37% is sold to the power sector and 26% to the fertilizer sector.
GAIL is supplying around 60 million cubic metres per day at standard conditions of natural gas from domestic sources to customers across India. These customers range from the smallest of companies to mega power and fertilizer plants.

★ GAIL India Ltd. won the prestigious “Sustainably Growing Corporation of the Year” award from Federation of Indian Petroleum Industry (FIPI) in financial year 2021-2022.
★ GAIL won National Award for Excellence in Cost Management from ICAI presented by Shri Piyush Goyal, Hon’ble Union Minister, Commerce & Industry, Textiles, Consumer Affairs and Food & Public Distribution.
★ GAIL India Ltd. has been awarded for its conservation practices by PCRA (Petroleum Conservation Research Association) ‘Saksham’ a campaign launched by MoP&NG.
★ During FY 2021-22, GAIL’s Pata plant achieved the distinction of becoming the first GAIL unit to be awarded the “GreenCo Gold” rating by CII Sohrabji Green Business Centre.
★ GAIL India Ltd. won the “Special Commendation Award” in the Manufacturing Category at the 31st National Awards for Innovative Training Practices (ISTD).
